May Day
Workers of the world unite
Thursday was May Day.
Some on the old left believed Albanese chose May 3 as a symbol of left solidarity – the earliest Saturday after May Day. They gathered outside the Trades Hall in Carlton waiting for Comrade Albanese to follow Bob Hawke’s example and lead unionists in singing Solidarity Forever in a final exhortation before the election.
But Albanese is a Sydney lad as he keeps reminding us. So we have a short clip of George Mann leading the Sydney Trade Union Choir in Solidarity Forever. The choir is a little older than it was when Andrew Fisher led Australia’s first Labor Government in 1908.
