Weekly roundup Saturday 3 May

Is the tenant renewing his lease? (The Lodge)
Weekly roundup of links to articles, reports, podcasts and other media on current political and economic issues in public policy.
A note about the roundups
Over the last seven years these roundups have been about economic policy, particularly energy policy, but over the last two years they have been warning about the risks to Australian prosperity and democracy of right-wing populism. Hopefully that risk has retreated for now. There will be a short roundup next week, and a break before the roundups return.
What the campaign has avoided
Structural reform, particularly tax reform. Gambling
Scare campaigns of the final week
Labor will confiscate your investment property. Christians will have to have a welcome to country before each meal, replacing grace. The Greens are a far-right anti-Semitic movement. The ABC is controlled by China’s Communist Party.
Trump’s contribution to democracy
Canada’s Liberals have a huge debt of gratitude to Trump, as will our Labor Party if it wins today.
Polls
Little change in published polls. Some notes on preferences. Coalition hopefuls queue at betting shops hoping for a 34:1 payout.
Economics
Parties’ election costings – nothing to see here. CPI inflation – just where the government wants it. A gold rush explained. Unemployment explained. Immigration explained. Budgeting for natural disasters.
Public ideas
A chat about democracy.
